Patriarch Sfeir played a pivotal role on the internal Christian arena, and on the national level as well, with his explicit support for the Taif Agreement. In the year 2000, months after the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the Patriarch sparked the movement to demand the exit of Syria from the country. He also sponsored the opposition “Qornet Shahwan Meeting” and considered that the extension of President Emile Lahoud in 2004 was an unconstitutional step.
