He is recognized as the father of modern Lebanon and by some as the founder of the Lebanese state.
On the day General Gourau declared “Greater Lebanon,” Maronite Patriarch Elias Howayek sat to his right, and the Grand Mufti of Beirut, Sheikh Mustafa escaped, to his left. Howayek, according to historians, is one of the personalities who contributed to the establishment of an independent Lebanon, along with Fakhruddin Al-Ma’ani II, Bashir Al-Thani Al-Shihabi and Youssef Bey Karam.
