A Lebanese writer, historian, academic and politician. One of the greatest contemporary intellectuals in Lebanon and the most important critic of Arabic literature. He contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese University in 1951 and was its first president. In 1976 he joined the Lebanese Front and was with Dr. Charles Malek one of its most important theorists. Al-Bustani is considered one of the most prominent advocates of establishing a federal system in Lebanon within the framework of cultural pluralism.
