There is nothing in the biography of Charles Debbas, the Francophone orthodox lawyer and journalist, that he fought political battles other than the battle of the struggle against Turkish rule. He came to the local authority as overseer of the judiciary, to be elected after that, by French acclamation, in 1926, the first president of the republic in appreciation of his merits, knowledge, experience, and moderation.
